Canada Cup #1 Bear Mountain

March 7, 2017 By Gwendalyn Gibson 4 Comments

On Tuesday, I flew out to Victoria, BC for my first International/UCI race. The US national team brought 5 boys and 4 girls to this event. We spent the days leading up to the race with Shaums March getting to know the course and learning bike skills that will help us throughout the season.

The course was filled with steep climbs and technical down hills which were covered in mud from the rain. The conditions were different from what I’m used to in southern California, but after a few days, I felt comfortable on the course and ready to race.

Soon enough, Saturday was here and the other girls and I were warming up for our 12:30 race. It was tough to really get our legs warm because it was about 40 degreees outside and it even snowed earlier thst morning. Luckily, by the time we were lining up, the sun had come out for a while.

My nerves grew as I rolled up along side the rest of the junior UCI girls and watched the pro women take off in front of us. Then, the announcer counted down and sent us off on out first lap. The field went out fast and we were immediately heading up a steep climb. My legs were burning but I knew if I could push hard to the first single track my legs would get a small break on the down hill.

I entered the trail in 3rd, behind my US teammate Savilia, and we were moving down the technical down hill fast, growing a small gap. We started going through some lap traffic about half way through and the lead girl was able to get around a rider, giving her a lead on us. When the trail opened up again, we made our way around the rider and I got in front to try to catch the lead girl. After pushing hard, I was finally able to get to her just after starting the second lap. Then, it was just her and me with a lead on the rest of the field.

She lead up the single track climb pushing a fast pace. On the down hill, my Norco revolver FS took me over the rocks and roots smoothly and I realized I could pick up the pace. When we entered a small fire road climb, I made an attack to get to the down hill first in attempt to break away. I entered the next single track, with the other girl still close behind. I pushed the down the decent as hard as I could so I could begin next climb first. Soon, I was turning in to the brutally steep last climb going as hard as I could. At the top, I realized I had gained a small lead so I picked the pace up more and I got through the finish and started my 3rd and final lap.

I rode the last lap alone, feeling strong. On the decents, I tried to focus on the things Shaums told us, keeping my heels back, elbows wide, and taking all the lines we practiced. I tried to be smooth riding up the muddy climbs and not sliding out on the roots. Soon, the finish was just around the corner. I stood up and gave one final sprint thought the finish with a huge grin.

I could not be happier with how my first international race went and I’m stoked for all the awesome adventures ahead. Thank you to everyone who supported me in Canada this week; Team USA, Norco Bicycles, and of course, my family who was able to make it to the race to cheer me on! Now, I’m heading into my next training block, getting ready for the third Socal high school league race at Keysville on March 26th.

Socal NICA race #1 Beach to Boulders

February 20, 2017 By Gwendalyn Gibson 1 Comment

This past weekend was an exciting start to the season at the Socal high school league race number one, Beach to Boulders. My anticipation for this race had been growing for weeks because it is my last NICA season so I really wanted to start it off as well as I could. I was especially nervous about Lake Perris because it is a very flat and fast course with few climbs, which isn’t the kind of racing I prefer. To get an idea of how fast the lead varsity girls were going, our average speed was 16 mph!

The day prior to the race, good friends helped calm my nerves while we pre rode the course and had a good spaghetti dinner together.

Soon enough, it was race day and I lined up with the rest of the Varsity girls, all of us ready to fight for the leader jersey. As we were sent out for our first lap of three, I took the lead up the climb. At the bottom of the first decent, I looked back to see it was just me and one other rider, Madeline Bemis, off the front.

As we began the second lap, she took over the lead and we went back and forth for the remainder of the race. I made a few attempts to break away but already we were halfway through our last lap. At that point we both knew it was going to come down to an exciting sprint finish.

About 400 meters from the finish I stood up and began to sprint, giving it all I had. Ending a very close race, I was able to take the win by just a second.

I am sad to say I will not be attending the second highschool race this year. It was a hard decision to miss a race, knowing it might cost me the overal in my last NICA series. My biggest goal this season is to be on the worlds team going to Australia so I will be missing the race to compete in Canada with team USA at the Bear Mountain Canada Cup [XCO #1/Junior Series]. I am very excited to compete in this high level UCI race and from there I will be cheering for all my friends and teammates racing at Vail.

I can’t thank my family, friends, and sponsors enough for all of their support in helping me do what I love. Looking forward to the rest of a great season!

XC National Championships

July 17, 2016 By Gwendalyn Gibson 3 Comments

Prior to nationals, I spent the week at the NICA mountain biking camp in Mammoth. Attending this camp was perfect preparation to the biggest race of my season because it allowed me to acclimate to the high altitude and relax while riding with my closest friends. Camp flew by quickly and then there were only four days until the biggest race of my season.

In preparation for my race, my anticipation grew as I cheered on my friends during their races. My friends were achieving awesome results and were giving it their all in the difficult altitude. The night before my race I grew extremely nervous while looking at the call up list. I discovered I would not have a call up which meant I would be starting toward the back of the pack on race day. At the beginning of the season I didn’t have the opportunity to get my UCI licence. This meant I was only able to compete in category 1 races, the top category before UCI and Pro. Also, I was only able to make it to a few of the US CUP races which put me far behind in points and in my overall national ranking. My family and friends helped assure me that I would have plenty time to work my way into a good position at the start which helped to calm my nerves. I woke up the next day ready to go. Unfortunately, my race didn’t start until 4:00pm which meant I had long day of anticipation and waiting ahead of me. Throughout the day I watched the other races and attempted to eat little snacks so I would have the proper nutrients to race. The day went by slow but eventually it was time to get on my bike and warm up for the race! As I warmed up, I felt great and grew even more eager to race for the stars and stripes jersey.

Soon I was lining up and was lucky enough to grab a spot in the third row but that still put me behind 14 girls. I was ready to go and was determined to work my way to the front even with my less than ideal start position. Before I knew it, we were off and rolling. As we reached the first fire road climb, I worked hard to ride to the front pack and started the first single track climb in 6th. I could tell the girl in front of me was starting to fall back so I found a place to pass and made my way into 5th place. Finally there was a small decent but I could see the first and second place pulling away from the pack so I used the next hill to catch back up and before I knew it I was in second place. Soon Haley Batten, the reigning national champion for my category, and I had a lead on the rest of the field. I finished the lap right on her back wheel, feeling strong. As we came through the finish line for our first lap, I took the lead for the next lap. We made our way up the fireroad climb still wheel to wheel with Haley. We approached the second steep fireroad climb in the course and I powered up, eager to get it over with. I turned to start the single track that traversed across the mountain and looked back. I realized I had gained a small lead on Haley. I focused on being smooth and safe the rest of the lap. I came by my Dad who was out on the course and he told me I had 40 seconds on second place. My first thought was thinking, I must be dreaming right now. Before I knew it I was on my third and final lap, still holding my lead and feeling strong. The lap went by fast and I couldn’t hold back my smile as I made my way around the course with spectators cheering me on! I made my way down the last descent. My excitement grew because I knew a national title was only minutes away! I came down the last descent and I could see the finish line. I finished the race with one more sprint before throwing my hands in the air in celebration.

I was swarmed by my friends and family when I exited the course. I had never felt so happy and was still a little unsure if any of this had actually happened or if I was just dreaming. My entire season had been dedicated to working towards this race. I knew that I would be going up against major competition of girls who had been in Europe racing in UCI World Cups and going up against the defending national champion whom I have looked up to for the past two years, Haley Batten. When the final times were reported, I saw that I came in first by almost 3 minutes! To bring home the Stars and Stripes was more than I could have ever hoped for. I’m so grateful for my family, friends, and sponsors who helped make my amazing season possible! Currently, I am looking forward to the next season of mountain biking feeling more motivated than ever and ready to put in the work to defend my title. I can’t wait to see what the future holds as I enter the next season as a Cat 1 17-18 National Champion
